Earth Day 2010 - RE

I think that the earth should be more taken care of. Not just on earth day, but every single day. Honestly, though I don't think we're going to change. We're too addicted to our resources and have too high of a population. By the time I'm dieing and old, we'll have probably 10 billion people and rationed resources like food and gasoline. I think the only way we could be saved from ourselves is if ALL of us actually TRIED to conserve what we have. Which is also unlikely because we think we need more than we do. I know I sound negative, but that's what I believe.

Earth Day 2010 - SM

I think Earth Day is kind of useless. I mean, sure, it gets people to care about the Earth . . . for a week or two. Within a month (or so) of Earth Day, people are back to not caring about the Earth. Even if people did keep caring about it, it wouldn't do any good. According to Derrick Jensen (see previous blog), the city's garbage is only three percent of the world's trash. It's the huge companies that produce most of the waste, but I doubt they're going to change. Pretty much the only solution is to stop buying things that those companies make, but that isn't going to happen, either. I really don't think the world is going to change how much waste it uses, for we are addicted to stuff, and we will probably never let that stuff go.

Earth Day 2010 - JM

The earth day movie thing was really long. Today is earth day. That is why we watched the movie. On earth day what we should do is not litter or stuff like that. Some people go around picking up things. A lot of people do that. A lot of other schools probably watch a movie on earth day just like we did. A lot of people recycle a lot on earth day too. if you go through a drive through thing at a fast food place, you should not throw the wrappers away after eating all the food in it. Those are some things you should do on earth day.

EARTH DAY 2010
by: Sharktail
In class today we watched a video about how earth day started and what it was meant to be about. It really got me thinking the earth is something that we have been ruining. What is going to happen if we cant get rid of all of the waste. We will one day all die. To think that we will have to walk around useing a gas mask and a flashlight to find where we are going is just, well, scary. The movie really made me think about the way we are treating our earth. I hope that people understand that we will not always have this earth if we keep treating it the way they are.

Earth Day 2010 - KJ

Today is Earth Day 2010 what do we have to do. today is a day of saving energy and recycling. we need to save our energy by turning of lights and taking shorter showers. we can recycle by separating plastics and papers from garbage. we need to try and make everyday Earth Day. we should do all this stuff everyday. we are pretty much wasting our resources on things JUST for our entertainment. We need to save our resources and use them for our most important needs.our priorities are food, water and shelter, these are the most important.

Earth Day 2010 - TY

Earth day 2010

Today is the earth day of 2010. Our world has advanced in ways that will alter the dark planet for better or worst. The Sentient races of the 3rd rock from the sun have come quite a way. They have invented new ways to help their biosphere continue on with glee. They have solar energy, water energy, geothermal energy, and wind energy. Many have grouped together to protect their planet from harm. However not all is perfect for this dark lit planet. There are many dangers that continue to harm our shared world. Oil, bombs, litter, and wasted resources. So as a fellow being I beg of you to help this old rock.

Earth Day 2010 - SC

This video was sort of a way to say "we will do it later". This was unexceptional, we needed to do then and to the fullest extent. If man continues on this path we will go extinct. In the video Earth Days, we saw how it came to be. We saw how it was before. We saw what they want it to be in the future. That is NOT how it is now, at least not all the way. It's not completely the way they wanted it, but they think its good enough, I do not. Our earth needs to be helped, protected, cared for. If we can't do this we are doomed.

Earth Day 2010 - MM

Today is earth day 2010. At least it was when I typed this. To celebrate we watched a very long movie about earth days. This movie showed what everyone in the US is doing to destroy the earth. It also showed a lot of short term solutions to save the earth. There were a lot of protest and a lot of different books about how we should change our planet. There were a lot of ideas and if we would put all of the good ideas into action, we could change the earth. What if we could build a super renewable energy generator that could harness multiple types of renewable energies.

EARTH DAY

by.TB

well what I am going to talk about is what is earth day. what I think about earth day is.I think that it was the best thing ever . earth day is to help this earth . my question is dose it help this earth. with my info it is not at all not even a little bit. people don't realize what we are doing to this world. we Americans litter trash that can be recycled . this really angers me because people don't care about this earth . if we Americans keep littering we will end up needing gas masks to go to the store. I will try to help this earth if I die trying .

Earth Day 2010
By:T.M.S
In the video they were talking about the first earth day in 1970 and how the cost of gas went up dramatically from 4$ a drum to 16$ a drum. I believe that the U.S is stealing most of the resources from the rest of the world and I also think we should share the resources evenly with the world instead of hogging it all. This world would be much better if we just took an hour of our day to clean up just out part of the neighborhood we could eliminate most of the waste just in a city imagine if the whole world did that.

Earth Day 2010 - DK

We have to do what we did 40 years ago. We need clean water and clean air so we can live. We do not need garbage in the oceans, river etc. We need to throw garbage were it belongs. We need to respect the Earth and the whole world. I do not want the world to end now and maybe never. God created the world but he gave is righteous son to the world. The world is not going to go to a end because God created the world and etc. I want the Earth to stay Earth and not any thing else. I want my kids to see the world than a garbage Earth.

Earth Day 2010 - TH

Its Earth Day 2010 what do we have to do? I think that we have to try to cut back on are reliance on foreign oil. We should also try to stop clear cutting and overall littering. If we can improve on all of these we could help the earth and or children s children to have a better future and lives. So I call to u all, please help in stopping pollution of the world and with that we have a chance to help the world and our future on planet earth.

This is Mr.T's third blog

Earth Day 2010 - JK

Today is earth day 2010. 40 years ago earth day was. created. The reasons for earth day was we were polluting the earth. New york was in a cloud of smog. Kids were playing in DDT. I think that earth day was some what of a way to get money and some what of a good thing if you think about it it is a good thing we are trying to save are plant we are trying to revers what we have done to mother earth. Earth day is a time to fix some of the wrongs we have done. if we use less gas and start to car pool we others ride bikes even walk we can help mother earth.

"Or let’s talk waste. In 2005, per-capita municipal waste production (basically everything that’s put out at the curb) in the U.S. was about 1,660 pounds. Let’s say you’re a die-hard simple-living activist, and you reduce this to zero. You recycle everything. You bring cloth bags shopping. You fix your toaster. Your toes poke out of old tennis shoes. You’re not done yet, though. Since municipal waste includes not just residential waste, but also waste from government offices and businesses, you march to those offices, waste reduction pamphlets in hand, and convince them to cut down on their waste enough to eliminate your share of it. Uh, I’ve got some bad news. Municipal waste accounts for only 3 percent of total waste production in the United States." - D. Jensen

well I think that the dude is a brave man to reduce his his wast to 0. with a last name like jensen you can do anything. if i had to reduce my wast to 0 does that include TV because i like my TV well problem i guess im going to have to go with out my tv for a year but my tv is fun to watch. we make to much wast in are life time but we were brought up in this world. 0% that a lot of work

I have some questions for derrick like how was life with out all that stuff we live with. living with out the stuff we can live with out and then some. i guess i might be able to reduce my energy out put by unplugging the chargers when not using them. Maybe we all can make a difference in are life if we used less trash. have fun.

Alrighty then, special thanks to Derrick Jensen for the source to my response. I would like to say that in my opinion it is considered over doing it when you use absolutely no electricity at all, and your toes are poking out of your shoes? that's not helping the environment, that is just bad hygiene and obsessive compulsive disorder. Trust me I should know, I have obsessive compulsive disorder and Turret syndrome.

People who have to go that far in reduce waste are really in all honesty over doing it, seriously no refrigerator? that's being radical.
I'm not saying that it's okay to purposely waste things, but some people go over board with it. Reducing some of the waste that we... waste, probably wouldn't be a bad idea.

What I think is that we should recycle more and throw away less. I think Derrick Jensen is right about the factories. But wow, I didn't know that we only recycle 3%! Even if the whole country recycles, we're still only recycling 3%! If only the country could recycle more and throw away less.
To be honest, I still forget to turn off the lights in my room. A few weeks ago I started to recycle more things. The only bad thing about that is that my brothers actually questioned my new ways about recycling. But even if I forget to turn off the lights, I least I can still remember to flush the toilet. Plus, my family and I got this new washer/dryer set that does more and faster loads of laundry, but it saves a ton of energy, unlike our other set did. But I still think this country could recycle more, including the factories. Oh and also, we should not be dumping our waste into the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean! Not only does it pollute the world even more, but its also killing the wildlife that live in the waters. So for me, I think we need to recycle more and not dump our waste into the waters!

Truth of life
By: Sharktail
The amount of waste in America has grown over the years and will continue to grow unless someone steps up to the plate and lets everyone know that its not OK. In class we read a piece of an article that said if everyone in the united states did everything in there power to be Eco friendly it would only make up 3 percent of waste in America. That means that big factory's and company's are creating 97 percent of the waste. Its scary to think of how much waste is being made by the company's that we bye things from everyday. I truly think that the people here on this earth are slowly but surely destroying the earth. I think that it is our job as well educated citizens on this topic we should take a stand. Maybe we should take a trip to down town Portland and split up into groups and not only educate people in Portland about what we are doing to the earth but also we should pick up trash from off the streets and recycle whatever we can. I think that if adults see how much kids around the age of 13 and 14 care about our earth and and see that we are taking a stand that they might be inspired to also take a stand. Our guiding question for the year is What are the rights and responsibility's of a citizen. The rights and responsibility's of a citizen are to help out in the community and help educate people about our earth and the world around us.

Wow! THREE PERCENT!!! That means that all those people who recycle everything and think their helping the environment aren't actually doing really anything! I mean, they're helping to bring the waste in the U.S. by three percent, but that really barely makes a difference. Instead, they should talk to those who do make a big difference and try to get them to change the way they use their waste. Then they could worry about their own stuff. I'm glad Derrick Jensen decided to write about this.
I wonder how much waste would be left over if those big companies and just the normal people cut it all down to zero. I mean, I'm guessing there are other sources of waste, and I'm guessing what they are and how much they put out there. That doesn't matter, though, because I extremely highly doubt everyone will cut their waste down, especially down to
zero. People don't need to worry about their own garbage quite so much, for it doesn't make much of a difference.

This report is about waste that people throw away. If people throw recycle twice as much as they usually do, then the recycled amount of things that should be recycled would be doubled. If people didn't use any toilet paper, made their own clothes, ate all of their food, usedno electricity , and grew their own stuff, thenthey wouldnt need to recycle and have no waste. Oh, and i forgot to say that the person who wrote it was Derrik Jensen.

If people recycled everything, and people used water cars, then there would be no pollution or waste. But that would probably never happen. If it does i would be very suprised. It would also help the enviroment if people did not cut down many trees. if they did that the roads would be more fun to drive on and the trees live. Most roads here are really boring because their all straight and flat and stuff. But people here should also recycle a lot more.

Well, he does have a very valid point. I agree with him, the truth about the trash is factories are really to blame. No matter how hard you try there's always going to be someone else who's producing a lot of trash. Your waste may be zero, but theirs may be ten. Sure you can try and persuade them to change their ways, but it probably won't happen. So I wouldn't be too surprised if they said no and kicked you out of their office. Or they could just laugh and say "What a silly idea! We don't waste at all!". I suppose the worst thing that could possibly happen is they could release the hounds. Then you'll regret ever trying to save the planet from it's trash problem.

But, not everything has to be completely green. You could simply persuade them to recycle a bit more. Like instead of throwing paper, cardboard, and plastics out, they could sort them. And maybe if they have a lunch room, they could set it up like our school's lunch room. We have one for plastic, paper/cardboard, and one for Caprisun pouches. That's an easy way to keep track of what's garbage and what can be reused. And they could even start a green team of their own! Maybe that's how we could get big companies to recycle.

In that paragraph there are to many how who would throw that away with out a second glance many of us wouldn't even recycle it. That just goes to show that to many people are stubborn or they don't recycle enough. If the whole state of Oregon stopped using electricity, started recycling, and stopped the government offices and waste buildings, all of this would only amount to 3% of the USA's waste.

If only all Americans could do this, but that would be a miracle. Almost every American would say absolutely not, but I wish that it would be a "Ya lets do it" I wish that's what they would say, but yet again that would be a miracle. Americans have grown attached to their electronics and their lifestyles. It would be hard to give them up, it would be really hard. The food would be different so would the interests, it would be simpler than now we would have a harder time making war machines, food, and houses. That would all be alright by me, It would be all right by me.

A lot of unneeded waste is created. Our world could be much more efficient. How ever the human greed factor would have to go down. I believe there are several things wrong with world and we have to work with what we got. We need to have 0 waste before we can say you should have 0 waste. Which is why I support the 0 impact man.

I don't quite agree with the no electricity idea. There is more then one type of energy to use that does not produce waste. Water dams, solar panels, and geothermal wells. They have no impact and work. Strange enough whenever a geothermal well goes up there tends to be a unfortunate event where some pro-activist will sue the plant. Which doesn't quite make sense. Yet it happens any way.

Derrick Jensen wrote this article on awareness of per-capita municipal waste production. there are all sorts of things we can do to reduce our waste. we can recycle everything, use cloth bags for shopping and use your clothes over and over again. we can try to make the government recycle and not produce so much waste. The big problem is that our waste is only 3% of all waste. if we reduce our waste to 0% we still have a ton of waste.

The real problem is not our waste its all the waste coming from factories and companies. the companies create waste when making their products. Farms create waste from their animals. every money making company makes more waste than the average human. we need to try and switch companies to use more "green" products. the point is we need to worry about company waste not our waste.

Derrick Jensen is a man that made a great decision to start helping the earth. This could give the world an idea to save the earth. People seem to not care about the earth. They just go on with their lives like nothing is going on. But thing's are going on. We are at war with each other. WMDs are around the world, just waiting to be used. We have made death machines. And sooner or later some alien race is going to think: Why are they killing there own? with that many weapons they can kill three planets in one sweep!
Derrick Jensen might be the push, the example that we need to heal the earth. The earth was made to be green, tan, and white. That is our real earth color. But if we keep on going, the earth will be so sick, it wont look like the earth as we know it today. We can save the earth, the earth is sick, and we need to help it.

Sincerely,
K.R.H

well i think that this is completely odd. i think this i odd because the municipal waste is only 3% of all the waste.if we Americans can recycle every thing that is recyclable well lets just say that wont do much.

the cause of all the waste is companies. all the companies use tones of recyclable stuff but they decide not to recycle the stuff.the companies that i am talking about are the ones that give you your computers, shirts, books, food, and games.i am going to start to recycle stuff ins-ted of throwing it in the garbage .

Today we read someone else's blog in class. The blog was about a guy who managed to cut his municipal waste down to zero for the entire year. It was probably really hard to do. He had to cut his waste that he threw away down to zero. That meant he had to recycle everything and throw away absolutely nothing for the entire year.

It was a almost impossible thing to do. He had to wear the same shoes for the whole year and they eventually broke. He cut off all power from his apartment. He had no refrigerator. Then in order to cut his municipal waste down to zero, he had to convince the big companies to lower their waste enough to count for his portion of the city. He did all that to lower his municipal waste to zero. Municipal waste only counts for 3 percent of all waste in the US.

Brendan Bannon Slideshow - MD

Senior Fly's

Today in class our teacher showed us a slide show. He said we has background knowledge from seeing the documentary Reporter. Brendan Bennon is the photographer who took the pictures. It's sad children were kidnapped. The warlord's rebels have been attacking small villages. And when traveling on the road, villagers have to carry spears and other weapons. Only because they're unsure when the next attack could be. That's the bare minimum of protection.
It makes me sad to hear that they lost the simple things. Like talking to friends. Walking without weapons. Collecting water in the evening and sleeping without fear. We need to help them regain those things. Everyone deserves the comfort of knowing you're safe. Maybe in 10 years things will start to change. But at this point, changes aren't very predictable. Only time will tell.

What I Think About This Video

Well, I think that we Americans should help these people in Congo. I think it is wrong to invade the villages. When people do that, it tears me apart. It also tears families apart. How would you like it if you heard that one of your family members or friends got killed?
I am very happy when people like Brendan Bannon say "I take my hat off to those who still have hope." The people of the Congo village are afraid to go back home. I would feel the same way. I will help the people in Congo because they need my help. The raiders who invaded the village might have something wrong with them, and maybe they hurt. My last thing is that I think the villagers should fight back. I would fight back.

Awesome R's first story to come

It was a short video to be perfectly honest, but from what I understood, juvenile punks invaded the poor villagers and forced them to move out from the village. Slaughtering their friends and families
huh? well that is just brutal... I feel bad for them.

To make matters worse for these people, they are trying to harvest enough food before the rainy season, so they don't starve during the winter. I hope that these people will do okay on their own until things in their village can settle down a bit. to quote the reporter, "Life for these people is hard enough without this happening."

Mr.T's first blog

I watched a Brandon Bannon video and I felt sorry for the kids that were kidnapped and killed by the LRA- Lords Resistance Army. The thought of kids being killed and kidnapped just makes me sick and seething with rage. When I see the faces of the kids you could see the unmistakable sign of fear and terror in their eyes. You could almost smell the fear radiating off of them. The kids and family's went through allot just by seeing their friends get killed and the parents by seeing their kids get taken away.
The people that go to the concentration camps should be considered heroes because they go into the concentration camps and each day they have a chance of being killed or raped. They help the sick and the diseased, they provide medical supply's ,a shoulder to cry on and, a listing ear. They are the heroes.

Brendon Bannon did a report on the Congo people. This reflects on his visit. They have been attacked by the LRA (Lord's Resistance Army) The LRA is killing and kidnapping their people. There are almost always refuges from Congo. Families are being kidnapped and enslavedThese people barely had enough to survive. After these attacks they have almost nothing.

It is now spring and they are struggling to survive. They are trying to plant crops in hope for food. They are planting crops for what could be nothing. We should try to help them. We could give them food and clean water. The LRA does not have the right to kill helpless people. This is wrong. These people have done nothing, but the LRA is killing them. This a sad thing going on and we need to help stop it.

I am a woman of many things, I can ignore practically anything. But what I can't ignore is whats happening in a country outside of the Congo. Many people there fled from many gangs with guns and evil minds. Many people, mostly families, where killed or captured. If any were captured, they would be slaves, or raped. What I don't understand is that we are using our money and military to fight in a war that isn't ours. The "war" we're in is only about religion, and it will never end. So why are we using our soldiers and money just so we can help a war that will not end anytime soon. We could use our military and money to help the families that are in-slaved, being killed or for the poor women and young girls that are being raped.
We could help them get though this if we try, and leave the fighting religions fight. No matter what we do that situation will never change. Unless everybody in the world starts to say "This is wrong, we should stop fighting!" no, that will never happen. Well, not in my great-grand-children's life time. We should help the people that are being abused, raped, killed and make sure everybody is being fed. Nobody deserves to have bad things happen to them. (but Hitler) It hurts me just thinking about this. This very minuet, somebody is being killed, raped or starving to death. We need to help them, we have to.

Sincerely,
K.R.H

Yesterday I watched a really sad story. It was about what the people in Sudan were experiencing/experienced. There had been frequent attacks on the people living there. The attackers were the Lords Resistance Army (LRA). Before the attacks, Everyone was already in a terrible state. Almost everyone was struggling to keep up with their families need of food. Many people were starving. Alot of people were homeless. It was hot and wet. It was also planting season when the attacks started.

The LRA took over homes kidnapped children and slaghterd others. There was one kid who made it out on a neighbors horse, he had seen his family and friends being killed. Also it was planting season so many familys will have no food because the LRA have their crops. It is very sad and I think that we should end the war in Iraq and start a war there. The LRA should be stopped and we should have donation boxes in the US to help them.

The movie was good enough, I did expect the LRA to be quite violent. Brendan Bannon did an amazing job, he went there and got interviews. As it goes many refugees had lost so much already, their family and friends.
No one should live in fear, no one should live in such conditions. It happens and I think we should stop it. We should help not just with money, but also with actually going there to help them, and give them stuff.

The places were in Congo, Uganda, and Sudan. The photographer was Brandon Bannon. People are scared because they don't know when the next war is. People are getting support from South Sudan. They stay close to the main roads. There is terrified people that don't want to go home. They organized a group of supporters. There were several men, women, and children that needed tending to.
I think the fights were horrible. I'm glad it doesn't happen here. Hopefully, the sick will get better. Hopefully, the wars will end. I think it's cruel to rape others.

Lost In Fear..
By: sharktail
Today in class i watched a documentary by brandan bannon. This documentary was about the LRA (lords resistance army) attacking random villages. Many people have ben killed and ubducted by the LRA. The MSF (Medicins sans frontiers) has been going to many refuge camps to treat the sick and wounded. I think that MSF is doing an amazing thing. It's scary to think that people have to live like this everyday. I know that if one day something suddenly happened like this to america i would be so lost and would not know what to do. In this documantary brendon Bannon says,"My hat goes off to people who survie there on a daily basis. They have it hard enough with out something like this happening.
I really respect him for saying that. He is right they do have it bad enough with out something like that happening. I think america takes what they have forgranted. We have a steady shelter. We have police and not all the time but alot of the time we have justice. These people never got the chance to live like this. These people most likely think that this is normal and thats whats even more sad. It's not normal to see your sister raped and your family slaughtered. I just hope that you think about these people and how they live and realize that no matter how bad you have it someone else has it ten times worse.

In a country right outside the Congo, some people fled Sudan because of attacks. Brendan Bannon decided to look into it. The people who ran away were terrified and upset. People were being killed and kidnapped. Doctors were going to help the refugees. The people had also run away at one of the worst times possible, for they needed to plant their crops. It was really hard living there, and Brendan Bannon himself said he tipped his hat off to those who could live there on as daily basis.
I cannot imagine losing my home and having to move to a totally new strange place. I cannot imagine watching friends and family being beaten and slaughtered right in front of me. I cannot imagine hearing about the death of someone I knew. It just makes me so much more thankful to be able to live in the U.S.

* I think that the people in Congo have it pretty bad; they live in fear and hopelessness. Their entire lives have been turned upside down by the violence of rebel forces. When rebels attack, family and Friends are killed. There was a boy who was paralyzed, and he watched his entire family being killed right before his eyes. There was a man who watched in horror as his two children were ripped out of his hands, stolen by the rebels who were going to sell them into slavery. For his part the father says that he will always feel like a bad father because he could not save his children.

* Families get torn apart and many are forced to leave their homes. Pregnant women and children and even babies are separated from their families. Some are sold but some are forced to make their own way as husbands, parents, and families are killed. The boy who was paralyzed would’ve died had it not been for the kindness of strangers. Many of the people became refugees. Fleeing to Uganda or Sudan. Having to start their lives over. Some people were given land others were left to pick up the pieces and survive on their own.

* The Journalist Brandon Bannon has said “I take off my hat to those who survive daily.” I feel the same; I couldn’t begin to imagine what life is like there. It makes me sad and angry, and I wish there was something that I could do about it.

The Sudan borders Congolese and both sides are devastated from the frequent attacks of the LRA. The attacks have left many villagers in ruins. Life has become quite hard for life for these villagers which wasn't even easy before.
These villagers have left there destroyed homes in hope of better life. Many villagers have lost family and friends due to these frequent raids. Due to fear of these attacks villagers carry spears, bows, and arrows in hope to defend themselves from any further attack. All hope seems to be lost. How do you repeal a gun with a spear?

Trying Something New

We here at the 7/8 Crew at City View Charter School are going to try something new. We're going to continue doing Mr. Joe's incessant writing topics, but now, we're going to share them online. Blogging is the voice of the future, and we're going to experiment and participate in this important medium. We are going to explore various topics and find our collective voice.

Our Expedition this year, since we are an Expeditionary School, is answering the question "What are the rights and responsibilities of citizens?" Essentially, we're looking at responsibility. We're looking to see where we can help, and where we can correct past mistakes.

We hope you enjoy.
